First off, the Goodreads synopsis of Entrapped:
Entrapped is a thriller of high stakes: life and death, love, and oil.
Set in Alberta, Entrapped is the story of Liv Gardner, an ambitious young oil executive intent on stopping farmer Tom Wainwright who is sabotaging her rigs after a spill of lethal "sour" gas poisoned his wife. Desperate to save the company she built, Liv plants evidence to frame Tom. But when the evidence is used to indict him for a murder he didn't commit, Liv alone can save him.
And now, welcome Ms Kyle to my blog!
ENTRAPPED: Inspired by a True Story by Barbara Kyle
The inspiration for Entrapped was a true story of a man whose land was surrounded by oil companies’ rigs and gas flares, and whose livestock were sickening and dying from the poisoned air and water. His complaints were ignored, so he took matters into his own hands and sabotaged the rigs. Using this flashpoint, I created the novel Entrapped. It’s set in Alberta, Canada, and is the story of Liv Gardner, an ambitious young oil executive intent on stopping farmer Tom Wainwright who is sabotaging her rigs after a spill of lethal “sour” gas poisoned his wife. Desperate to save the company she built, Liv plants evidence to frame Tom. But when the evidence is used to indict him for a murder he didn't commit, only Liv can save him.
Writing this book meant a lot to me, because the issue of the environmental crisis we’ve created in our world is one I care about deeply. No essay or piece of journalism can convey the immediacy and drama of a conflict situation the way that fiction can, and I think the thriller genre does this best. Entrapped is thriller that makes the life-and-death stakes of a lone saboteur battling the immense power of Big Oil feel very real and immediate for the reader. We ask ourselves, What would I do in that situation?
Another important source of inspiration for Entrapped was the people I met in northern Alberta who are facing this corporate abuse of their environment – their land, their air, their water. When I was researching the novel I drove around that area and talked to farmers and ranchers and rig hands. Their stories are the lifeblood of my book.
Thank you so much Ms. Kyle!! It has been a pleasure having you on my blog.
