Nanowrimo: Day 12

Day 12 of Nanowrimo!!! Congratulations to everyone who has made it this far!  I've had a strange week of writing, pretty much hating my novel and the circular conversations the characters were having.  When I received my week 2 pep talk saying that it was normal to hate your book about now, I felt relieved.  Even though I've done this before, I felt pretty good about this story idea, I love the main character, and was disappointed to feel it going nowhere.  Maybe there is a lesson in detachment there...

I also loved Erin Morgenstern's talk about throwing ninjas at your book (or, in her case, sending them to the circus).  I did try this.  My book takes place in ancient Greece, so I sent the main character to the agora (marketplace).  There was some excitement to be had, but not much.  I think I will try this approach again soon, though.

But yesterday, I was on fire, I managed to write nearly 5000 words!!!  Yes, I feel really good about that, getting back on track after taking last weekend off (but for very good, creative reasons).  It helped that I hit a juicy part of the book - I am writing a kind of alternate history of Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus (who married his mother and killed his father).  Well, yesterday, the truth started to come out about Antigone's parents so there is lots to say.  Still not sure how to make this palatable for a young adult audience, but I'll worry about that in December.  Now I can feel my love of Greek mythology coursing through my veins and into my fingers as I type away at my keyboard.

On a side note, I am doing a novel writing club at my kids' elementary school.  For some reason it is populated with about 15 grade 3 girls, 2 boys and a couple of grade 7s.  It makes for a fun mix and lots of stories involving mermaids, princess, ponys and maniacs (my son is one of the grade 3s in the group).  They are a great group, full of stories to tell and very rarely come across writers block.  This inspires me to keep writing anyway so long as I am enjoying myself.

I hope the writing is going great for all you other Wrimos out there!!  I'm thinking of filling my plot holes with silly putty, how about you?
